 This beautiful Caribbean island of Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras offers some of the world's best SCUBA diving. The island is surrounded by the world's second largest coral reef, hugging most of the shore. This provides calm, clear beaches for swimming and snorkeling, and many varieties of sea life.  2,000 years ago the first Maya settled in Cozumel Mexico. However, during this time, life in the Maya world was rich in religious ceremonies, and Cozumel, the jewel on the Caribbean, became somewhat of a sanctuary in the Yucatan region. Cozumel derived its name from the Mayan words Cuzam (swallow) and Lumil (land of). Together you have Cuzamil (land of the swallows) over time and with the influence of the Spanish, the name became Cozumel. Like many tourists do today, the Mayans of long ago considered Cozumel to be a sacred shrine.
